Creating a Restorative Environment of University Campuses
The term “recovery” was first proposed by Kaplan after the 19th century, and is defined as the process of restoration after the depletion of a person’s basic needs and abilities, and the environment that can facilitate this process is called the “restorative environment”. The university campus environment, like its main environment, has a direct impact on the physical and mental health of teachers and students, learning efficiency and the shaping of campus culture. In recent years, with the rapid development of the society, the improvement of people’s health consciousness and the increasing prominence of the health problems of college students, the restorative environment of university campuses has gradually become a hot topic in the field of landscape architecture.
University campuses not only integrate different types of spatial environments, but also are a complex system that integrates ecological, psychological, social and other multidimensional factors, so it is crucial to clarify the differences of each component in terms of basic conditions and target needs, in order to accurately deploy restorative resources and efficiently construct restorative pathways. Currently, the theories of restorative environment research on university campuses involve the biophilic hypothesis, attention restoration theory, and stress reduction theory, which synthesize visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, and gustatory perceptions, while experimental methods are mainly used to record changes in physiological and psychological indexes of student volunteers in the laboratory or campus environment in order to assess the restorative effects of the environment.
The topic of this issue “Restorative Environment of University Campuses” further explores the essential connotation of campus healing landscapes, planning and design theory methods, and empirical application pathways. The topic academic hosts of this issue, Associate Professors Li Tongyu and Xue Binxia, jointly organized 5 papers. Or based on the characteristics of cold climate and the spatial characteristics of university campuses, the logic and mechanism of mutual feedback and adaptation between severe cold climate and restorative environment were sorted out, and a path for the construction of restorative environment in cold university campuses was proposed; Or guided by healing, through planning approaches such as spatial layout, functional integration, and plant configuration, the interactive mode of the two major systems of warm corridors and green spaces in university campuses was summarized; Or based on the perspective of visual and olfactory perception, the impact mechanism and effect of rose color and aroma on the neural emotions of college students were revealed by measuring the changes in six neuroemotional indicators during the pre test pressure and post test recovery period; Or the interactive relationship between the design characteristics, performance and restoration potential, environmental preferences, and restorative activities of the snow landscape space on university campuses was quantitatively analyzed, and optimization strategies were summarize; Or by combining audio-visual materials to form multiple experimental conditions, the impact mechanism of campus landscape and sound source types on positive emotions, environmental recovery, and eye movement patterns of college students was revealed.
From the perspective of educational objectives and campus environmental construction goals, research on the restorative environment of university campuses is of great significance for the health, development, and well-being of higher talents. This seminar presents research innovation in the field of restorative environment, which is inclusive and has social application value. It has exploratory significance for promoting the in-depth development of landscape architecture in this field from multiple dimensions and disciplines.
